Although it’s sometimes overlooked, sulfur is an important nutrient to all plants. Let’s take a look at how to add sulfur to corn, including the methods, amounts, fertilizer types, and research. We can see how sulfur additions to corn affect yields, and how to get the most out of sulfur fertilizers for corn.

Sulfur and Corn: Why It’s Important

One of the primary reasons sulfur is critical to crop production is that it works hand-in-hand with nitrogen in the plant. Sulfur is required to allow the plant to use nitrogen efficiently. Poor nitrogen performance in crops is often associated with lower than optimum available sulfur.

But sulfur is a vital crop nutrient itself. It’s an integral part of amino acids, which are essential for plant protein production, and it also contributes to chlorophyll formation.

Considering what we know of the need for sulfur, and taking into account cooler environmental conditions at planting which may limit mineralization of sulfur from the soil, we can draw the conclusion that early sulfur applications may be beneficial to the development of the young seedling.

When it comes to sulfur additions to corn, let’s take a look at sulfur fertilizer at planting first.

Sulfur Additions to Corn at Planting

There are many different application methods and products available to meet the sulfur needs of corn crops.

Applying sulfur with the planter is an excellent placement method to get the available form of the nutrient next to the root system and maximize the benefit to the new plant.

This placement can also be more environmentally friendly because it is placed near the zone of uptake and will likely get used by the young plant before it has a chance to leach from the soil system.

Which Sulfur Fertilizer Can Be Used In-Furrow?

One of the best products to apply with the planter is AgroLiquid’s eNhance™, which can be safely applied in-furrow with common rates of 1-2 qts/A for most crops. It has been an exceptional product for providing three to six pounds of equivalent sulfur at those rates.

Please note: very few—if any—other sulfur products can be used in-furrow. This gives eNhance an edge. When applied in-furrow, it’s the closest sulfur source to the new seedling’s root system.

How Sulfur and Nitrogen Work Together

Applying nitrogen while planting also provides an opportunity to add sulfur to the nutrient program. The addition of sulfur to applied nitrogen improves the plant’s response to that nitrogen.

One AgroLiquid product that mixes well with liquid nitrogen fertilizers is accesS. Nitrogen fertilizer is often placed 2×2 or on one or both sides of the row.

These placement areas near, but not directly with the seed, are still beneficial to the young root system. AccesS should only be applied away from the seed and the previously mentioned systems work well for planter application of this product. A typical planter application may be 1-2 gallons per acre which would provide five to 10 pounds of equivalent sulfur.

Sulfur Additions to Corn: Dataset

At our North Central Research Station, we conduct studies on many different crops with many different fertilizer programs, so we can see the results for ourselves. We also work with other farmers and planters to solve fertilizer challenges and optimize fertilizer programs. The chart below shows data from both eNhance and accesS in multi-year studies. At least seven years of data and 12 experiments were used to compare additional planter applied sulfur to a normal planter program without sulfur.

This experiment also assessed the use of sulfur fertilizer additives – eNhance and accesS – to a corn planter program.

The first source, eNhance, is a seed safe option and can be applied in-furrow up to 3 qt/A. This experiment compared 5 gal/A Pro-Germinator and 2 qt/A Micro 500 with and without the addition of 2 qt eNhance applied in-furrow.

The other source, accesS, is not for in-furrow and should be applied away from the seed in a 2×2 band. This was compared to the same planter rates of Pro-Germinator and Micro 500 but applied 2×2 with and without the addition of either 2 or 4 gal/A of accesS. Yield results appear on the table below.

Sulfur Additions to Corn Fertilizer ProgramsConclusions:

  • Highest yield was with the eNhance in-furrow applications. Next was microLink Sulfur and then accesS. This confirms that accesS should not be applied in-furrow, even though we did not observe stand loss.
  • accesS at any of the applications did not produce corn yield as high as that with eNhance, even though in other experiments it was as good as or better than ATS as a sulfur source.
  • eNhance has been proven as a very good in-furrow sulfur additive for corn for several years at the NCRS.
  • It was interesting to note that even though the soil sulfur level was low (8 ppm), there was no rate effect as the yields with either 1 or 2 qt/A of any of the products were similar. These results and others like it make research a challenge.

Conclusions:

  • Both planter applied programs of Pro-Germinator and Micro 500 increased yield significantly over the no planter fertilizer check. There was a slight yield advantage, 2.7 bu/A, to applying Pro-Germinator + Micro 500 in-furrow compared to 2×2.
  • The addition of 2 qt/A of eNhance to an in-furrow planter application increased corn yield by over 6 bu/A.
  • Applications of accesS to a 2×2 planter fertilizer program increased corn yield nearly 2 bu/A when applied at 2 gal/A however, highest yield was achieved with the 4 gal/A rate with nearly 9 bu/A increase.
  • Both eNhance and accesS are excellent sources of sulfur and can be easily added to a corn planter fertilizer program to provide the necessary sulfur a crop needs to achieve top yield.

Sure-K

What results did the data give?

The first plot trials ran from 1996 to 2005 on corn, comparing AgroLiquid Pro-Germinator, Sure-K, Micro 500, and High NRG-N use with conventional liquid, and conventional dry. The results: The AgroLiquid program had a higher average yield despite lower pounds per acre of actual nutrients applied, and did not have extra application trips of dry fertilizer.

Researchers performed tests over ten years of corn yields and ten years of soybean yields, all with four replications of treatments. Here are the results for the permanent plot corn yields 2011-2020.

 

What do you notice?

Yields were much higher than the 170 bu/A yield goal, even for the nitrogen only. The highest average yield was with AgroLiquid. The AgroLiquid yield was statistically higher than the conventional dry treatment, and the AgroLiquid yield was significantly higher than that of the “pound for pound” rate of conventional fertilizers.

That’s not all…this table shows the extra corn produced over 10 years compared to using only nitrogen. By using Pro-GerminatorSure-K and Micro 500, an extra 219.3 bu/A was produced, which is like producing an entire extra year of corn.

Pro Germinator

Even though we want everything to happen quickly, it doesn’t always work that way – and it’s not always the best. With fertilizer, it can lead to a waste of time and money. But what if you were able to tap into both the fast and slow?

As we all know, crops need phosphorus to grow well. But when we use phosphorus fertilizer, we have to be careful about tie up in the soil, which means the phosphorus can’t be easily used by the plants. In soil that’s more acidic, phosphorus can get stuck because of iron, aluminum, and manganese. In soil that’s more basic, calcium is what makes it difficult for plants to use the phosphorus.

With so much going on this time of year, it’s easy to focus on now, but it’s critical to start thinking about next year. Postharvest irrigation and fertility can be the most important aspect of growing trees and vines. Increasing yields and quality depends on having a solid postharvest plan.

After the stress of harvest, nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium will begin to transition from leaves to spurs in almonds, and from leaves to roots and woody tissues in vines. In almonds, bud initiation and differentiation has already begun, so the fate of the next crop is already underway. Water stress at this point in time will significantly reduce next year’s crop.

Postharvest irrigation is also very important to ensure that the leaves stay active for as long as possible so they can continue photosynthesizing and storing much-needed carbohydrates for next year’s crop. When dormancy breaks in early spring, trees and vines will be functioning solely on stored nutrients. Nutrient uptake from the soil is very minimal at this point due to cool soil temperatures as well as the lack of leaves.

Adequate postharvest fertility to replenish nutrient reserves will help make sure that your crop has the energy it needs to maximize production when dormancy breaks come spring.

Nitrogen (N)

Up to 20% of the total seasonal demand for nitrogen in almonds can be applied postharvest. This is also very similar for grapes. Postharvest nitrogen will help maintain leaf area and extend the time for photosynthesis to keep producing carbohydrates in the trees and vines.

Postharvest N will also ensure that reserves are replenished and early shoot growth and leaf out will be strong in the spring. It is important to take in-season tissue samples into consideration when determining how much nitrogen to apply. Any soil-applied nitrogen in the nitrate form that is not taken up by the roots will be subject to leaching from rainfall and irrigations.

Foliar-applied nitrogen is also a good choice for postharvest applications. It is common to use a fast acting nitrogen source in this situation, such as urea-based products.

Phosphorous (P)

The amount of phosphorous used by trees and vines is much less compared to the demand for nitrogen and potassium. However, this does not mean it’s less important for optimal growth and yields. A postharvest application of phosphorous will promote healthy fall and spring root flushes, as well as ensure the trees and vines have a good energy source when dormancy breaks in the spring.

Choosing a phosphorous fertilizer that is protected from tie up from cations in the soil is important and will ensure that it’s free and available for the plant to uptake as needed.

Potassium (K)

Potassium demand in almonds and grapes is even higher than that of nitrogen. A postharvest application of potassium is essential in order to restore reserves, even more so if your yields were above average this season.

Potassium is an important aspect in plant water relations and cell reproduction. If potassium reserves are deficient when dormancy breaks in the spring, new fruiting spurs will develop at a slower pace or even die prematurely as compared to a tree that has optimal potassium reserves. Root uptake is minimal at this point, so a soil application of potassium will serve to replenish K reserves in the soil.

A postharvest foliar application of potassium is a great way to ensure you get the potassium into the trees and vines to replenish those reserves. Choosing a K product that is free of chlorides and hydroxides, as well as effective at penetrating the leaf cuticle and easily translocated once in the leaf will provide the greatest return on your fertilizer investment.

Zinc (Zn)

Zinc is a very important micronutrient that plays a major role in synthesizing auxins. These auxins ensure a uniform bud break and a good fruit set in the spring.

Almonds are commonly zinc deficient. This is due to a number of reasons, including certain rootstocks that are not adequate at taking up zinc from the soil. Zinc deficiencies are also common in areas with alkaline soils. Zinc is fairly immobile in the soil so postharvest foliar applications are most effective at correcting deficiencies and restoring reserves.

Boron (B)

Collecting hull samples to send off for boron analysis should be a staple in your postharvest game plan. Hull samples are the most effective indicator of boron levels in almonds.

Boron is very critical for development of flowers, specifically pollen development and viability. If the hull analysis shows less than 80 parts per million boron, the trees are deficient and are most likely losing yield potential. Postharvest foliar applications of boron are an effective way to correct deficiencies and restore boron levels in the tree.

As you complete this year’s harvest, let your mind shift gears and begin thinking about next year’s crop. Its fate is already underway and having a solid postharvest irrigation and fertility game plan will ensure your trees and vines go into dormancy with adequate nutrient reserves.

With a good postharvest fertility program, your crop will be off to a great start come spring and you’ll be well on your way to improving yields and quality year after year.

Soil testing

Growers need to know the current condition of the soil to know how to best help what’s planted in it. Not only does this help identify deficiencies, but it also tells them how much nutrition is already in the soil to balance out the added nutrients. Of course, this changes over time, so regular soil testing is needed. The soil test also reports on the relationship of nutrients in the soil; if one is high, it can affect the availability of others.

Tissue testing

During the season, this gives growers a deep understanding of what’s happening in the actual plant. It answers questions about nutritional effects and its current nutrient status. As a result, growers can look at tissue tests to help decide the next steps of a nutritional program.

Foliar applications

If the crop is lacking in a nutrient, the next step is to determine why its deficient, and what a grower can do about it. If it’s decided that a nutrient needs to be applied, then a foliar application with liquid fertilizer can be directly applied to the leaves, get absorbed, and move through the leaves into the plant. So many factors go into producing a good crop, whether it’s fertilizer, the soil conditions, or the right weather. Tissue testing is another tool to help understand what you can’t necessarily see. Let’s look at what tissue testing is, how it works, and why adding it to your process is a benefit that outweighs the cost.

Crop Tissue Testing
You want to get to know everything about your crop, and tissue testing helps you get to know it even better. Routine testing is usually carried out mid-season to judge if the crop has the right supply of nutrients. For farmers who do routine tissue testing, it’s part of the normal monitoring system, not usually done in response to a suspected issue. Tissue testing is useful for checking the nitrogen, sulfur, and micronutrients like iron, zinc, manganese, boron, and copper, which are more difficult to determine in only a soil test.

A nutrient deficiency can lower the yield potential, but tissue sampling can catch it early when there’s still time to solve the problem… at least with some nutrients. Even though tissue testing looks only at nutrient levels, when farmers combine it with scouting fields, understanding nutrient relationships, and the willingness to try and fix issues that are found, growers can improve their crops.

Growers aren’t purposely under-fertilizing crops, so deficiencies can be a sign of a bigger problem. Drought, disease, soil compaction, insect and weed pressure can all contribute to a crop’s use of applied nutrients. Tissue testing can help navigate the path your crops are taking to harvest.

The same is true for planning for a healthy crop. The value of a prescription crop nutrition program is that it’s tailored exactly to your soil, location, cultural practices, conditions, and goals.

Soil

Everything starts with the soil. Soil testing is the first step, since testing can tell you nutrient levels, pH, base saturations, organic matter, and cation-exchange capacity (CEC).

Each of these factors affect how your crops absorb water and nutrients, whether they’re usable in the soil, and the biological activity determining soil health.

Tissue Testing

Soil testing reveals the health of the soil, but to show how plants actually absorb these nutrients, you need a tissue test. A plant tissue sample will show what nutrients the plant has absorbed and the movement of nutrients throughout the plant.

Combining a tissue test with a soil test is a great way to see what’s really going on with your crops. It can also help you identify if organisms are affecting your plant, disease has set in, or if the plant’s root growth is insufficient for nutrient absorption. This way, you can get the full picture of the plant’s environment, and its reaction to that environment in a particular moment in time.

Follow these tissue testing steps for the most accurate results.

Location

Understanding how location influences crop growth can help you make informed nutrient application decisions.

Different crops have different optimal temperature ranges for growth, and the temperature can affect the ability to absorb nutrients. For example, if the temperature is too high, it can cause water stress in plants, or if it’s too low, it can slow down plant growth and nutrient uptake.

Location and climate also influence soil type, which impacts nutrient availability. In regions with high rainfall, the soil can be leached of nutrients, making it harder for plants to access nutrients. In locations with sandy soils, nutrients can be washed away by heavy rainfall, and in regions with heavy clay soils, nutrients can be tightly bound to the soil particles, making them less available.

Management Practices

Keep in mind any management practice that could affect how, when or the rate of fertilizer that may be applied. This includes tillage practices, soil amendment placement, cropping patterns and soil type. For instance, if fertilizer is being applied during planting, keep planter placement of crop nutrients in mind, and be sure you are pulling soil samples at 6” – 8” in the strip. This is important in getting an informed fertilizer recommendation for the area.

AgroLiquid’s LiberateCa® is a liquid fertilizer designed to prevent or correct calcium deficiency for all types of crops, in many different soil types.

On XtremeAg: Cutting the Curve Podcast, host Damian Mason spoke with XtremeAg founding member Kelly Garrett and AgroLiquid sales account manager Aarron Stahl about their experience with LiberateCa.

This season, AgroLiquid and Kelly Garrett are conducting research in 40-acre test plots, in different soil types.

Part of the impetus for this research was that Garrett was dealing with insoluble calcium issues, which were a limiting growth factor.

Calcium bully
“In our soils, calcium can be the most prevalent nutrient, and it has double positive charge. It’s a bully in the soil, because it ties up all the other nutrients, because it’s trying to get neutral,” Garrett said. “It’s my biggest limiting factor.”

After tissue sampling, Garrett was surprised to learn that even though he had prevalent calcium in the soil, he was still calcium-deficient, since it was insoluble.

Garrett shared a very personal account of where AgroLiquid LiberateCa made a difference for his crop.

In 2017, Garrett was growing soybeans, and he had 110,000 stand count with an average of 162 pods on every plant. A bad storm came in, the soybeans laid down, and they aborted half the pods. When they stood back up, they had 80 only pods, and they made 88 bushel.

“It was devastating to me,” Garrett said. “I thought here I was going to have way over 100 bushel beans…I had it, but we couldn’t harvest it, so it doesn’t count.”

He then tried to plant early soybeans under irrigation, and he thought he had 100 bushel again, but only got 80. The problem was that the branches got so heavy they couldn’t support themselves, and they laid down.

“We put LiberateCa into our program, and we ran a trial…just touching the plants and pushing on the branches, the skeletal strength was remarkable,” Garrett said. “The different was remarkable, and it’s a grower standard practice now.”

During the trials, along with using LiberateCa, they are going to aim to finish out the later pods, push nitrogen and Sure-K, and work with the vascular system to translocate nutrients.
